The cake is baked

The cake is baked

Not only is the cake baked: it's damned well half-eaten.

Today's ABC tracking poll has Hillary Clinton at 49% in a two-way race. IBD/TIPP, a very Trump-friendly poll, has her leading by 3 points. Early voting numbers among Latinos in Florida, Nevada, and Georgia are through the roof, spelling a very steep hill for Donald Trump to climb.

It seems that every bit of good news has to be met with the warning against complacency. I'm not complacent. But I am stocking up on good booze for Tuesday.

Mrs. Clinton has had to fight the press, the GOP, the Russians, and now the FBI. And she's beating them all. On the one hand, that shows her stamina and political acumen. On the other, it bodes ill for the next four to eight years. She must at least secure the Senate this year, and then the Obama/Clinton coalition has to come out in force in every off-year election to secure Democratic dominance on all levels—federal, state, and local. This is just a battle. The war is far from over.

So as we head into the last weekend, take a well-deserved breath. It's not over, but we can be confident in the trajectory things are taking.
