Thanksgiving didn't begin as national holiday in the 17th century. It began with a presidential proclamation by Abraham Lincoln in 1863:
We may be going into dark times. (Everything is up in the air politically right now, and my powers of prognostication and analysis failed me this election cycle, so I'm hedging my bets.) But in the end we can rely on friends, on family, and on ourselves to make landfall after a storm at sea. This holiday reminds us of this.
