Love Trumps Hate
There are people who have been wearing safety pins in order to make a statement. They are wearing them in response to the election of Donald Trump. People are wearing safety pins because they don't believe in or accept his rhetoric. They want to wear the pins as a sign that they are a safe space for someone who might be feeling vulnerable.
My sister decided to put on a safety pin and she went to Drug Mart and she noticed an Asian woman wearing a safety pin on her coat. My sister went up to her and touched her arm and pointed to her safety pin. She said it was a wonderful feeling.
Love trumps hate.
We are now engaged in a war. It's not a war fought with weapons although there are people who have been physically harmed. We are in a war of ideas and values. We are in a battle between love and hate.
Where you find hate you will find anger. Where you find hate you will find exploitation and domination. Where you find hate you will find inequality and injustice. Where you find hate you will find division and where you find hate you will find pain and suffering. None of these are helpful or beneficial qualities. None of these add to the value of a society.
Where you find love you will find goodness. Where you find love you will find unity. Where you find love you will find humanity. Where you find love you will find well being. Where you find love you will find brotherhood, and most importantly where you find love you will find compassion. These are the qualities that we must look towards if we want to build a healthy society. These are the qualities that we need to nurture and grow.
We are sitting at the crossroads in a war of values. We need to get off the fence. We need to make a choice. We need to provide a safe place for those who feel vulnerable. Love trumps hate and what that means is that love is the more potent force. Hate puts up a powerful looking front but behind it is weakness and it is weak because it is the lesser force. If in fact love is the greater force and we find ways to nurture it, it will grow and it will grow in potency. As an individual and as a country and as part of humanity we need to become a safe space which is not weakness but it is where true and real strength resides.
