Recap of the Al Smith Dinner
The Al Smith Dinner is one of those things which is a rite of passage for all presidential candidates. It's a fundraiser for the Al E. Smith Memorial Foundation, a Catholic charity. (For those of you who don't know who Al Smith was, he was the Democratic presidential nominee in 1928. His running mate? Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was also the first Catholic to be nominated for a major party, something which wouldn't happen again until 1960.)
In general, the major party presidential candidates attend and trade gentle barbs. It's meant to be an evening of winding down, sloughing off the grind of the campaign.
Donald Trump began his routine well enough. I have several people telling me that he was jovial. And then, of course, being Trump, he went to his dark place, attacking Hillary Clinton viciously, to the point where he was booed by the audience. And, of course, Trump being Trump, was oblivious to the boos. In his mind he had no idea that he trespassed the decorum of the event. He has no decorum. He has no use for the niceties of civilization. His narcissism brooks no concern for what anyone else may expect in a public setting. He's at the tail end of a campaign where he's going to scorch the earth. He is, quite frankly, Hitler at the end of the war, ordering the destruction of Germany by retreating troops as the people didn't deserve to live if they couldn't win the war.
You must watch for yourself. I present both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton's roasts. He gets booed. She gets a standing ovation. Not bad for someone who "hates Catholics".

AUTHOR'S CORRECTION: I stated that FDR was Al Smith's running mate. I misremembered that factoid.
