Donald Trump began to gain momentum during the primary process when he called for the building of walls. He seems to want to construct many different kinds of walls. He wants to build a wall to keep Mexicans out. He wants to build a different type of wall to keep Muslims out. He wants to build a wall to trade. In essence he wants to build a wall that will keep us divided which will prevent us from moving forward. Trump has told us repeatedly that he builds great walls.
If you were to build a wall around yourself and you ran out of food you would be out of luck because the wall you have built would prevent food from getting in and it would prevent you from getting out. You would effectively have cut yourself off from life. You would entomb yourself. You would most certainly ensure your inability to survive.
Living things need the flow of life in order to sustain a sense of well being. When water doesn't flow it becomes stagnant and toxic. If a tree has roots that are somehow blocked off the tree will be unable to take in the resources it needs to sustain life. When there is a block in the flow in some system of our physical bodies our physical sense of health and well being suffers. It's easy to see that when we build walls in systems that need things to flow that we will create a disease process and therefore a diseased system and that suffering and destruction will be the result.
It is clear that there is no hope in building walls in ways that deteriorate life. If we are looking for hope going forward we are going to need to learn to build bridges. In constructing bridges we have the means to bridge the divide. Building bridges enables the resources that are needed to connect to those who need them. Building bridges connects us and unifies us and opens doors.
Pope Francis has spoken about building bridges. Both President Obama and Hillary Clinton have made it clear that building bridges is essential to their understanding of how things need to work.
I live in a rural conservative area of Ohio. I consistently walk and ride a bike in my neighborhood. Over the last several weeks I have seen a continuous increase in Trump yard signs and car stickers. Every time I see a sign it feels like a shock and I feel like I can't breathe. I feel a well of emotions inside of me including sorrow and anger and I sense the presence of a wall. One of those walls I experience as bubbling up inside of me in reaction to seeing the signs and the other is my expectation that the person putting up that sign embraces the idea of walls.
Because I am out and about a lot I often have opportunities to interact with people who have a very different world view then me. On the one hand I feel the urge to rage at some in my community due to their support of this monstrous man but unless someone is being directly abusive to me interacting gives me the opportunity to find ways to build bridges which is vital if I am looking to bridge the gap and heal the divide that is so deeply destructive to humanity.
Whether someone is a Democrat or a Republican or if they are right or left or up or down or inside out is not the point and is not what's important. What is important is that we look for opportunities to build bridges of any kind. If we want to evolve then we are going to need to find ways to build bridges even if those bridges seem insignificant or small. A bridge is a bridge.
There has never been a time where the breaking down of walls and the building of bridges has been more crucial. This is true not only in this country but also around the world. I can't stop people from wanting to build walls but what I can do is look for opportunities to find ways to construct bridges. Sooner or later the people who believe that building walls is the way to keep themselves safe will begin to see the error in their thinking. They will come to see that cutting themselves off is going nowhere and leads to nothing and is a path to self destruction. We cannot survive under the illusion that we are self reliant. We are an interconnected interdependent whole. That is the reality. The only viable path going forward is to build bridges and through the building of bridges we will bring down the walls.
