All rats for themselves
Well, it's happening.
Paul Ryan, that profile in courage, won't rescind his endorsement of Donald Trump, but neither will he defend or campaign for him. He's focused solely on maintaining Republican control of the House.
That may prove difficult. A new NBC poll has Hillary Clinton 11 points ahead of Trump in a four-way race. In a head to head, she beats him 52-38. And, hidden in the poll, Democrats have a 7 point lead in the generic Congressional ballot. Good luck, Paul.
And, of course, Reince Priebus has pulled all RNC money from the Trump campaign, desperate to salvage Republican seats, not only in Congress but in local states.
The SS Trump is sinking, and the rats who were living high off the hog are now realizing that their time is up.
Of course, if they had been honorable people and found some way to deny him the nomination, we'd be talking about a very different story. But the need to deligitimize the first black President and the first major party female nominee overrode all other considerations. The troglodytes loved Trump, so they ignored all his glaring peccadilloes. It's almost as if hitching your wagon to a sociopathic, misogynistic, racist, homophobic xenophobe might not have been the best idea in a rapidly changing electorate. But Republicans know only one play book since the 1960s. Even though it's no longer serving them well, they have nothing else.
Sit back and buckle in, everyone. The next month is going to be something never seen in US politics.
