What GOP strategist's racist attack plan says about Mitt Romney and the Republicans

Yesterday, the New York Times exposed an undercover plan submitted to a conservative super PAC funded by Joe Ricketts (owner of TD Ameritrade and the Chicago Cubs) to attack President Obama's character by invoking Rev. Wright, and its revelation quickly forced Mitt Romney to repudiate it as well as the super PAC - Ending Spending Action Fund (catchy!) - to shelve it. The super PAC's head has been doing the rounds on media this morning, strenuously asserting that it is "deeply unfair" to associate the plan with the billionaire Mr. Ricketts, saying that the PAC asked for proposals from many strategists, and this plan was but one to be submitted.

But then, there's this quote, from Joe Ricketts, staring at you in the face, right in the proposal:
Joe Ricketts said it himself...

"If the nation had seen that ad, they'd never have elected Barack Obama."
What ad is that? The one that John McCain wouldn't let them run in 2008. The ad that would use Jeremiah Wright, whose church Obama once attended but a pastor whose divisive rhetoric then-candidate Obama denounced. Joe Ricketts, the man who would fund this thing, to the tune of $10 million already expressed interest in these kinds of character assassinations of Barack Obama, which is what seems to have precipitated this proposal.

So, I'm not buying that Mr. Ricketts is completely innocent in this, and that the plan was just dropped on his lap and before he could burn it, the Times got a hold of it.

But let's go a little bit beyond that. What does it tell us that anti-Obama billionaires, and top GOP strategists - including ones who worked for the last Republican nominee for president - are willing to go to this length to discredit Barack Obama, when their own current presumptive nominee wants to talk all about the economy all the time, or so he tells us? I think that the implications of this plan goes beyond the particulars of this specific line of attack. It tells us something about the current state of Republican politics, and something about where the best Republican strategists think Mr. Romney is headed if this election is fought on fair terms and on the issues. I'll address this last part first.

Romney is hopeless, and the best Republican strategists know it.

Fred Davis, the man behind this proposal, is a veteran ad maker who has quite a reputation in the GOP circles. He was the man behind John McCain's "celebrity" ad against Obama in 2008, as well as Carly Fiorina's "Demon sheep" ad in 2010 against fellow Republican Tom Campbell, a Republican primary contest Fiorina won. He's no outsider when it comes to Republican politics and trying to get Republicans elected to office. While known for some of his whackier ideas, Davis is a well-know, well-respected ad strategist among Republicans running for office.

And here is what Davis' proposal had to make Americans hate the president (the proposal's term, not mine) had to say about his party's nominee:
They still aren't ready to hate this president, but they're definitely open to the concept that someone else (perhaps even Romney) could do a better job.
In other words, Romney is an empty shell, and if only we could convince people that Obama is an evil black man that you need to hide your daughters from, even Mitt Romney's empty shell of a candidacy could fill in the job of president. Just exudes confidence in their nominee, don't you think?

That's the point. Republican strategists know that Mitt Romney cannot win the election on his own merits. Hell, he can't even win this election by attacking the merits of President Obama's policies. Why not? Because they know that President Obama's record, in turning the tide away from the worst recession in most of our lifetimes and in the face of a withering, obstructionist opposition, in unassailable should voters be exposed to the truth of that record.

Should voters be given an opportunity to actually make a choice on the merits - between a corporate buyout specialist who cashed in on people's misery and a president who saved the American economy from falling off a cliff and saved the American auto industry - it won't even be close. Should voters be given a choice on the merits - between a candidate beholden to a party that refuses to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act on the grounds that it might end up protecting gays and brown people and a president who's dedicated himself to women's rights in all aspects of life, whether pay equity or health care decisions - American women will rout out not just Mitt Romney but the party whose banner he now carries. Should voters have a choice on the merits - between a candidate who openly opposed the precise ways it took to kill bin Laden and the President who gave the order to take out that menace - Romney would be finished.

So what do you do, if you are a Republican strategist, looking at the prospect of unlimited billionaire money? You do everything possible to make sure the election does not focus on the merits. You write a plan of racist attack and then try to cover it up by including a plan to hire a black conservative to speak for you. You take the quintessentially American story of a kid of a father from Kenya and a mother from Kansas, raised by a single mom, who grows up to become the leader of the free world, despite every adversity standing in his way - you take that story and call that man un-American.

Then, and only then, someone - perhaps even Mitt Romney - would become the alternative voters would turn to.

A party desperately looking for its identity.

If the only way for the Republicans to win a national election is to smear the Democratic president with racist attacks, just what does that say about the party? What does it say about a party that can't find a candidate that could go toe-to-toe with the president on the merits? What does it say that the best chance the GOP has is the guy who's been pushed to the far right corner, as opposed to the ones who just started out there?

What that says about the Republican party is that they are in a sad state. A party incapable of and unwilling to solve any of the real problems in America, instead looking to remake our country into a feudal society. This is a party out of touch with the times. It's a party that preaches individual responsibility but cries foul when its candidate is held responsible for his vulture capitalist record. This is a party that touts government just small enough to insert into every woman's vagina. It's a party that talks about freedom but will be damned if gay couples are allowed the freedom to marry. This is a party so unconvinced by power of its own ideas that they have to resort to buying elections and disenfranchising minorities of their right to vote.

This isn't the party of Lincoln. This isn't the party of Teddy Roosevelt. Hell, it isn't even the party of Reagan. The Republican party has ceased to have any identity of its own - at least any relevant one to the issues facing our country today. Instead, it has become the party of no, the party of destructive power, and the party of aristocracy. Perhaps even more than any of that, they are a party of gut-wrenching hatred. Hatred for minorities, hatred for the success of this country should it happen under a president not of their party.

I really do wish sometimes that the Republican party resumed its role as a small-c conservative party that is interested in intelligent debate. I still wouldn't agree with them, but I would enjoy the debate. I think the American people are better represented when all sides, despite their genuine differences, are interested in solutions that work for all of us, when we can find those solutions with ideas considered from all sides.

Conclusion...

But I suppose that is too much to ask at the moment. I suppose this sad state of the Republican party, the political Right and the moneyed conservative elite will continue until we, the American people, make it clear that it will not work. The only thing we can do is not to reward this behavior. The only thing we can do is teach them a lesson - that these are critical, serious times, and we want serious people who can solve problems, not politics of personal destruction. We want a vigorous debate about how to solve the problems our country faces, but we want our leaders to work for a solution, not for an impasse.

And that's a pretty solid message. Let's send that message in November.

Oh how they must long for the time and place (North Carolina, 1990) when a Jesse Helms could beat Harvey Gantt with a thirty-second racist TV spot. And then there's the gold standard, the Willie Horton ad that two years earlier helped put another Republican in the White House.

  2. If Ii remember correctly, the material that was in the ad that Ricketts said would make the electorate hate the President was in the public arena during the 20080 campaign.  There was a lot of footage of Jeremiah Wright preaching about the negative actions of the Bush government (all of which I agreed with, by the way) and it did not do the trick.   Why this clueless man would think that rehashing all this old material would have a different effect this time is beyond me.  Fortunately, the rightwing seems as stupid and devoid of people skills as it is mean, which should lose the election for them if the electorate is even vaguely awake.

  3. Media rounds for this creep is a stupid idea. What does he expect will happen? Americans will see the light - SUPER PACS are a gift from God because billionaires created them, and we average Americans just think THE WORLD of people a billion times richer than we are. Yes to Super Pacs! Yes to Ricketts! YESYESYES to Romney?!!!

If the Republicans actually use this, they're playing right into Obama's hands. They're going to turn off every voter in America. But, they've been doing that anyway. Boy, are these guys toast in November-like I've said before, by the time Obama's done with them, Republican will be a curse word.

Because, Sheila-they're CLUELESS. They've got no idea how to beat him. And that racism crap plays right into the President's hands. He's got them trapped, and they know it. Hence, all the racist dog whistles.

What I don't understand is WHY the republicans who aren't racists, Islamophobes, and homophobes blindly follow those who constantly push this type of Bull Stank.  If I were a republican, I'd be screaming against these things on every rooftop in America.  The only reason I can think of for the silence from this group of republicans is that their desire to get PBO out of the WH allows them to turn a blind eye to the pus-filled sore of racism, homophobia, and Islamophobia that is at the core of the GOP.  Ricketts is okay with privatizing profits but wants to socialize the cost of renovating his stadium.  Rahm Emanuel is smoking mad at Ricketts and the others for trying to pull a trick like this, and he should be since Ricketts want the taxpayers to foot the bill to renovate a stadium that he will profit from while knowing that the citizens won't.  In a way, I think it's good that Ricketts has been appearing on media programs.  It ensures that people who don't know about this plan will be exposed to it and discover just how desperate and despicable Romney and the republicans are.  I believe Romney knew about the plan and had given his consent to it.  What he didn't count on was having the public find out about it before the group began to air the ad.  If Romney said the moon would be full tomorrow, I'd Google it to confirm whether he was telling the truth or not because he has zero credibility with me.

Nailed it!  Nailed it!  Nailed it!  Great diary!  This is what the Repugnants have fallen into because they have allowed their so called "base" to be the racists, the teapotty nutbutters, the christianistas plus the big $$$ that has taken away the core of what they really could be.

If there are really any sane conservatives still left they are probably hiding away in bunkers until all this is over.

Deaniac, I'm not sure that racism as an issue will really work this time except with the hard core who were never going to vote for PBO in the first place.

It is pretty sad & sick that the default code for a once viable party is the race card because they really have nothing else to offer.

    ReplyDelete
  13. They really have got nothing. They claim the President can't run on his record and have got their media lackeys repeating it, even though that's exactly what he's doing, but they're the ones with no record to run on. What have they done since 2008 that's worthy of boasting about? And so they just dig up the same attacks from four years ago, not even new ones. If they didn't work then, they're not going to work now. All they're doing is showing they have no accomplishments, they have nothing new to offer, and they're more than a little racist.

Well, most of the sane Republicans have become Democrats or Independents. The other sane ones were behind that memo about Republicans becoming gay friendly. They should just get out and found their own party-the Republicans have gone so far to the right, there's no way they can come back. Like I said, they're toast.

They sure don't, Granny. Like I said, by the time the President is done with them, Republican will be a curse word. We NEED a viable second party in this country, so it's kinda scary. I do think the sane Republicans will form another party to take over, as the Republicans have gone so far to the right, they can't come back from it.

Last night a report from MO from a friend there left me more dismal than ever. The Dems are in disarray in part from the apparent complete meltdown of activism in OWS nationally, from disintegration in Wisconsin leaving Walker in the lead, from effective barriers to registration there of minorities and students, and from the DNC's indifference to that campaign.  Polls across the nation are totally in flux, so maybe that's good, but in NE the once very popular Sen. Kerry trails the Bagger candidate by a huge margin.  Warren is having a tough time in MA where her blue collar origins and consumer protection orientation OUGHT to be useful, but she's still lagging in many polls over the pretty boy without a core.

What is working, apparently, is Citizens United.  What is NOT working according to my friend, is a focused Dem strategy.  I still see so-called progressives saying Obama is preparing re-education camps, will round us all up thanks to the (totally untrue) language of the Defense Authorization Act, and that he should just be abandoned along with ALL non-radical Dem candidates.  It's back to the old DSoc discredited meme of "let it all fall apart and we will fix it."  Of course, there needs to be a coherent definition of "WE" as if there is an untapped progressive majority.  So - where ARE they?

If the polls in WI are not skewed, there are reports that UNION households are going 35% for Walker.  Walker!!!  Can that be true just because they did not get their own preferred candidate in the primary???  Are we really THAT stupid?  If enough Dems act like Baggers in demanding ideological purity and refusing anyone who is not perfect, we are doomed.  Not just in WI but nationally.

I am terrified that this nation once again will allow the Right to prevail, partly out of snotty racism and immaturity among the progressives.  I do not relish the idea either that we might re-elect Obama but saddle him with Baggers in the majority in both houses.  If Romney wins and both houses go to GOP extremists, I predict that by the end of 2013 we will have full fledged economic collapse, and we will have NO ability to overturn Citizens United making an FDR-style rout of the GOP almost impossible in 2016.  People are that stupid they will eat up the ads instead of paying attention to reality.  Dumbing down our citizens in school has worked.

Someone talk me down here - I am too freaking old to go through another Dark Ages, this time focused on stripping all of us of the essential safety net AND pensions.  I'd make a lousy bag lady.  Help Deaniac - can this be salvaged????

That's a bit comforting, Alma, thank you, but - too little, too late?  I see by the comments to this article how rabidly anti-union the responders are which is typical - and I hope they do not reflect the majority there any more than they do in Sacramento.  In fact I am beginning to suspect they are the self-same people!  But still...this is a depressing story for the lateness of the advertising efforts.  I hope they can pull it out.  And I hope nationally we turn the tide - the Gallup poll shows Obama leading with ONLY the 18-29 folks.  How ANYONE retired or getting near it could be for the man who will destroy Medicare and Social Security is absolutely beyond me!  Horrible - absolutely horrible ignorance in America.

  22. I'm sorry you are struggling CL. I've been there and it is painful. But please don't read the polls. The last one I read (do not remember which) had Obama with a comfortable lead. All comments to divisive website are crap. The Reps actually have devoted time and resources to skewing then, as well as LTE (supposedly from Rove's bag of tricks) Union members in 2012 only account for a small percentage of voters, but I will never believe Union folk would support a billionaire. It is counterintuitive. I am not from a union background, neither family of origin, nor procreation, and everybody in my world is solidly Obama. There are more non-union people in this century, I have read.

Romney is not even contesting MA.

Also if Walker is doing so great why has he taking to begging and calling us black folks for money and support. The poll in question sample size was 707 people, they don't say if they're republican or democrats. Lastly a lot of people who was hurt by Walker's policy still support him crazy I know. They think by supporting Walker they're sticking to PBO and the unions. That's how warped they're thinking is. This is why the president should stay out of the recall.

Stop reading Gallup, which polls like the electorate will be the one in '2010,not 2012. Efforts are being made to make folks aware of the barriers to voting.

Alma - yours is the first, "on the ground" voice I've heard, and it's VERY helpful.  I am shocked in a laughing out loud kind of way that Walker is Robocalling the Black community for money!!!  THAT is the BEST indication it's NOT in the bag for him!  What a hypocrite he is!

Yes - I DO know people can vote against their best interests, and that is why it depresses me, but I hope you're right.  I also heard though that registrations are below par with communities of color and college students (who, I hope, are mostly WI residents who can vote at HOME absentee?)

I could not bear more years of GOP power.  It will kill this nation, kill democracy for decades to come.  And I'm too freaking old to live through it!  I'd like a modest retirement when I get there - not desperation!  So thank you for your insights - along with gc's observations,  I am breathing more easily again.  Thank you!

Church Lady, please take heart.  I was up at 6 AM today to register voters at a farmers market here.  People seemed so motivated to "take out the trash" here in the very red state of AZ.  We had some who were already registered come up & talk to us about how it was so important to vote for PBO & other Dems who plan to run in our state.  People are fed up with the nasty, the racism, the corporations and the religious extremists.

Lots of people have been so caught up in just trying to survive that they don't have the energy to follow polls & politics like we do but many do know just where their tortillas are being buttered!  Some have jobs now when they were unemployed.  So many talked about health care for themselves & their children that they did not have before.  Others were concerned about whether their dreams of sending their children to college would be beyond them without PBO's support.

Most here are getting royally pissed about AZ being the poster child for hate, racism, bigotry.  We have PRIDE here.  Many of us have generations of family connection to this state we love.  We WILL STAND!  We will not lose what we love without a fight.

Remember!  The only polls that really count are in voting booths in November.  NO RETREAT!  NO SURRENDER!  FORWARD!

AZ may want to "take out the trash", but they don't understand who that is.  It's NOT the new immigrant citizen, the Black families here for generations, not women who believe they are equals, not labor, not public employees, not small business people.  It is those who leech off all of the above - they are the trash, and it's WE who intend to remove it and clear the air!

Thank you everyone for telling the world there are people walking door-to-door, putting democracy forward without pause, and working daily for our rights.  I am passing your messages on, giving people fresh energies elsewhere, and reminding them that you lose democracy ONLY when you do nothing at all.

Of course they know they can't win the election on the merits. If they thought they could win, they wouldn't lie about their policies--why would they need to lie if they truly believed the public was behind them? Same for voter suppression. Those two tactics (lying about their policies and voter suppression) are all the proof anyone needs to show that the Republicans know that Americans (other than their extreme base) rejects their vision of America.

I would think that using the Jeremiah Wright connection to promote the idea that Obama is a secret America-hater would be a lot less effective now that Obama has had almost 4 years in office.  It's easy to scare people about an unknown quantity, but it's a lot harder to do so about someone who is currently holding the office.  If Obama were going to do something dastardly, he would have done so by now.

And, am I crazy, or were there ads very late in the 2008 campaign about Jeremiah Wright?  I remember thinking "this was all discussed in the primary, this is old news."  Which brings me to my next point: this isn't some new revelation.  The media likes interesting and new information, not information that came out a long time ago and has already been discussed to death.  I don't see the ads getting a lot of media buzz (other than for their offensiveness).

    ReplyDelete
  45. Melinda Tanner12:19 PM

Yes, there were-and NOBODY cared about it. Wright was an "artificial controversy" that went flat rather quickly. The Clinton campaign tried it first and then the Republicans tried it. All Obama did was remark that he disagreed with Rev. Wright, but still appreciated him as a reverend. That's all it took-and if the Republicans try it again, the same thing will happen-nobody will care.

Projection. You see it every time you try to debate with a right-winger. Whatever they themselves think and do, they project it and accuse Dems and Obama of it. I had a classic on the Guardian debate thread today: one of the resident right-wing trolls claimed that Obama will say anything to get elected. I just pointed out that it was Romney's own party that came up with the etch-a-sketch comment, and that it was a bit rich to accuse Obama of something Republicans were positively boasting that Romney is doing.

They cannot grasp the concept that a lot of other people, perhaps a majority, do not see the world as they do.

    ReplyDelete
  47. ultraviolet_uk2:03 PM

The other thing to hang onto is the electoral vote maps. Even stevens in the national polls still puts Obama ahead by around 240-188 in the EV count, and Romney with virtually no path to victory.

And remember what a fantastic debater Obama is. He hasn't even started campaigning yet. What you are seeing is Romney at his peak just eking out a narrow lead over Obama while still at a standing start.

Don't sweat it, the Big Guy has got this one.

This attempt has backfired badly here in Chicago.  The Ricketts family had a proposal before the Chicago City Council for renovating Wrigley Field.  The family was going to put up most of the money, but since Wrigley Field is landmarked, they need City Council permission.  They also wanted Chicago to pitch in a bit of money.

That proposal is D-E-A-D because of this fiasco.  In addition, Laura Ricketts, who is a fundraiser for President Obama, has distanced herself from what her father is attempting, as did Tom Ricketts, the president of the Cubs.  The Mayor is seriously ticked off and the family is scrambling.

Who would have thought that pissing off Rahm Emmanuel was a bad idea, or ticking off the Democratic party in Chicago?

Rmoney seeming to go after Rev. Wright would only shine a light on his own religion.....which he tries not to talk about.

CL you seem to be concern trolling. Gloom and doom should not be represented on a pro Obama site. I understand we have our challenges, but following a rightwing fed pollster like Gallup will not help motivate supporters. Leave the polls alone and get to work. There are many of folks to register and get to the polls by November. We are still looking good on the electoral map so that is promising.

    KEEP HOPE ALIVE.....GIRL!!! :)

Church Lady, CHILL!!!! I live in Lexington, KY. where Democrats have a small edge over the GOP. I have seen just ONE Romney bumper sticker here. ONE. I have seen dozens of new Obama 2012 stickers on cars. Back in 2008, I had already seen dozens of McCain bumper stickers by now. The GOP is not in love with their candidate.

Hey kefauver (great name, BTW) thank you!  All these comments have helped a LOT. Hard to hear things are going sour at this date. Apparently the OWS meeting in MO was something of a hype fest, and it's very useful getting "notes from the front" in many areas.  I AM breathing again! Thank you!

Hey Keith - since I'm old enough to be your grandmother most likely, the "girl" part is, well, hmmm.

That said, I'm not following POLLS but, if you'd read the thread, asking my beloved community here at TPV to reflect on something reported to me by a VERY reputable source who was at an OWS meeting in MO where all this was reported.  As one who trusts the folks here at TPV, I will continue to run concerns past all these good minds to unpack the negative things heard.  Perfectly GREAT place to do that.  Deaniac will always let us know if we are "not appropriate".

Keithinohio - I am formally registering a cease and desist to you to stop addressing me as GIRL.  It's sexist, paternalistic, not cute, and you're not adding anything to the discussion anyway, so have respect.  You don't know me, did not follow the thread of origin on this concern, and I'm waaaay too smart NOT to ask questions of my allies here at TPV who have more direct experience with the events that were told to me in such negative terms.

I will not now nor ever NOT ask question, NOT be concerned, because that's how you know where and when to change strategies.  So kindly stop the sexism and, the superficial cheerleading. We can talk about what we want.  We don't need you to censor any of us.
