NEW No on 8 Ad: Feinstein Speaks.  And GOTV on E-Day!

Tuesday, October 28, 2008 |

Leaders of California, no matter how divergent their views on political matters, are coming together on the crucial civil rights issue of our time: marriage equality. Say what you will about Diane Feinstein, but she is coming through on this one for us.

Transcript:
SENATOR FEINSTEN: In my lifetime, I've seen discrimination. And I see it again in Proposition 8. 8 would be a terrible mistake for California. It changes our Constitution, eliminates fundamental rights, and treats people differently under the law.
Proposition 8 is not about schools or kids. It's about discrimination. And we must always say No to that. No matter how you feel about marriage, vote against discrimination. And vote NO on 8.
Right now, the pro-equality movement is on the verge of making history. We stand on the brink of an historic moment - we are poised to stop those who would deny equal dignity and protection of the laws to all people in California, literally, at the water's edge (if you consider where are votes are, along the coastline).
Diane Feinstein is on board. Barbara Boxer is on board. Maria Schriver is on board. Heck, even Arnold Schwarzenegger is on board. Are you? If you have a single hour to spare on election day, we need you. This thing is going to be won or lost by 2-3 points on election day. And what we are finding out is that 10% of our supporters are voting Yes by mistake, believing that a 'Yes' vote means 'Yes' to marriage equality. 10% of our vote, depending on the turnout, is going to be about 5-7% of the total electorate. We cannot have 5-7% of our supporters voting the wrong way if we are to win by a razor-thin 2-3 point margin. And so to educate our base and make sure that those 10% vote the right way, we are going to be outside of selected polling locations, talking to voters going in. We need thousands of volunteers for that. There is an all-day shift, as well as morning, lunch time, and evening shifts, and I need you to sign up right now to GET OUT THE VOTE:

If you can't join us on election day, or if you can give time other than on election day as well, use the same form to sign up for a visibility event. Again, we are out in high impact location to make sure that our voters vote NO. This is the most important thing you can be doing right now for the campaign. Also, if you can't do any of that, come to a local office and phone-bank. Depending on where you are, the contact info for the three central offices are here:

http://www.noonprop8.com/...

Call and find out a phone bank close to your area. Again, this is crunch time and the phone banks are focused on GOTV as well. Also those offices will tell you where you can get a lawn sign and a bumper sticker. Put your support for equality on display!

In addition, we cannot let up on the cash. Focus on Family is raising $2 million for the other side. We have to match them dollar for dollar. This is something you can do no matter where you are:

DONATE NOW.

Tell everyone you know in California to vote NO.

Prop 8 exploiting children, parents say. Plus a truth check on their ad.

Monday, October 27, 2008 |

Proposition 8 proponents in California have a despicable new ad using images of children from a San Francisco field trip in which children were taken to see the wedding of a teacher with her same-sex partner. The Prop 8 proponents are using that to suggest that kids will be taught somehow about sex (gay sex) early on in school. Now, anyone with a half a brain realizes that (a) children on all field trips are required to have a parental consent form signed by a parent or a guardian, and (b) no one teaches about sex in first grade.

But the crocodile tears the prop 8 proponents are crying for children has turned a new angle: the parents of the children shown in the ad are understandably horrified, angry and upset at the use of their children as political football. Prop 8, of course, showing all of its concern for children, refused to take the ad down or remove the images of the children from those ads. So much for them crying about "Oh, who will think of the children!"

Anti-Gay forces blackmailing pro-equality donors in California

Friday, October 24, 2008 |

You probably have heard this already: the opponents of marriage equality in California are desperate, and are now threatening pro-gay businesses with blackmail. In a letter sent to businesses who have donated to the No on 8 campaign, the anti-marriage equality side said,

"Make a donation of a like amount to ProtectMarriage.com which will help us correct this error," reads the letter. "Were you to elect not to donate comparably, it would be a clear indication that you are in opposition to traditional marriage. ... The names of any companies and organizations that choose not to donate in like manner to ProtectMarriage.com but have given to Equality California will be published."

Donate NOW to No on 8 - $1 MILLION MATCH

Thursday, October 16, 2008 |

I am posting this because I need your help. Yes, I do. Personally. My right to marry is under attack in California, and out of state hate groups are pouring in cash to make sure Proposition 8, the hate amendment to the CA State Constitution, passes.

I got an email this morning from the No on 8 campaign, stating that all donations to the No on Prop 8 campaign will be matched by Steve Bing and Equality for All dollar for dollar until Sunday (or up to $1 million). Take advantage of it and double your impact NOW:

McCain's lost it.

159,000 jobs lost in September

Friday, October 03, 2008 |

September saw the the biggest job loss since 2003. As the economy continued to tank, employers eliminated 159,000 jobs and the unemployment rate held steady at 6.1%, thanks to a system so screwed up that people are giving up on looking for new jobs.

Think about that. We are running head strong into the ditch with our economy. People are losing their jobs, their homes, their pensions, their livelihoods. As this was happening in September, John McCain was giddy about how the "fundamentals of our economy are strong". John McCain's economic philosophy and his policy positions are largely responsible for the mess we are in today. He has called himself fundamentally a deregulator, and deregulation is what is responsible for this mess.

I was wrong about Sarah Palin

|

It turns out the Republican Vice Presidential nominee can speak in complete sentences. After her mumble and fumble in front of Katie Couric's softballs, she was going to be the talk of town by simply managing not to trip off her heels at tonight's debate. But seriously, here's what I think is up with her. I think Sarah Palin is incredibly comfortable in front of cameras when she is looking into the camera and talking to a lot of people - but essentially to herself. She freaks out when she has to have a conversation one on one with anyone that might not be a complete and abject fan of hers - whether it's Katie Couric or Charlie Gibson. If I'm right about this, she is thoroughly unqualified to be a heartbeat away from the presidency - presidents have to have one on one talks with adversaries - whether they're political adversaries at home or people who have nuclear weapons pointed at Washington, DC from a foreign country. We cannot risk having a 72 year-old 4-time skin-cancer surviving president with a VP that freaks out in one-on-one talks. The good news is, it is looking more and more like she is not going to have the chance to prove me right or wrong. Tonight's debate demonstrated that while she is good on the stump and great at sticking to her talking points, she thoroughly lacks the ability give thoughtful, on-her-feet answers and to articulate details. She's got a lot of huff and puff, but not much beef. But I'm just a partisan Democrat. The really good news is that undecided voters agree that she lost the debate to Sen. Joe Biden, her Democratic counterpart. A CBS poll of undecided voters has Biden winning the debate by a 46-21 margin. Actually, that's a 46-33-21 margin (Biden-draw-Palin). A similar poll from CNN has Biden trouncing Palin by a 51-36 margin. Yes, Palin beat expectations - since everyone expected her to fall flat on her face and she didn't quite do that.
